Many people seeing photos of Sussex Spaniel puppies immediately fall in love and decide that this is definitely the breed for them. However research of the breed is not complete until you have met a Sussex Spaniel. We hold Shows and Events during the year and all newcomers are most welcome to join us. Our members are always delighted to talk about their dogs.
Of course all puppies are endearing, but they do grow up to be dogs and puppies need your guidance on how to grow up and become a sociable and friendly dog. Your influence on the puppy has an enormous impact on how he will turn out. They need to learn from you and therefore some rules and training should be part of your daily routine. Sussex are strong minded/willed dogs especially between 12 and 18 months, so the first year of training is very important if you are to deal with the following months successfully. You have to be FIRM or they will always think they can get away with things - FIRM but FAIR is the idea.
Your chosen breeder should help with lots of advice which you must listen to and remember. Owning a Sussex Spaniel, as with any breed, is a big responsibility - each one is an individual and if you are not "head of the pack", they will decide that they are!
Our excellent Breed Advice booklet is there to help you understand the breed. Please read this and take the advice that is given. Above all please socialise your pup, and ask for more advice if you are having difficulties – but don't leave it too late. When first contacting a breeder, please give them plenty of information about your lifestyle. They need to know that you are suitable to have a puppy and that you can offer the right home.
